Twin sisters Ambra and Fiona Albek have been playing music together since their early childhood and have maintained this strong musical bond even when their education has temporarily followed different directions.
Ambra was taught by Alberto Lysy and graduated with honors under the guidance of Igor Karsko in Lugano/Switzerland, followed by performance studies in Rudolf Koelman’s violin class and Wendy Champney’s viola class at the Musikhochschule in Zürich. She graduated with a Concert Diploma summa cum laude. Following her main interest in chamber music, Ambra attended other Master courses with Nora Chastain, Friedemann Rieger and the Carmina Quartet in Zurich.
Fiona was taught by Nora Doallo in Lugano graduating with honors; she continued her studies at the Musikhochschule Zürich in Friedemann Rieger’s piano chamber music and Lieder performance classes. She graduated with top marks and distinction as a piano chamber musician and accompanist of lyric singers.
As a Duo they attended Prof. Narciso Masi’s chamber music classes at the International Piano Academy in Imola, Italy, graduating with Masters’ Degrees.
Ambra and Fiona have also been active participants in Master classes held by Emanuel Hurwitz in London, Gérard Poulet, Ingolf Turban, Arnulf von Arnim, Peter Rybar, Sergio Fiorentino, Paul Badura Skoda, Alessandro d’Onofrio and Robert Cohen.
They have taken part in various music festivals and cultural events in Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Austria, France, Germany, USA (New York), and Australia (Sydney) and have received prizes in international chamber music competitions.
Prominent composers have written music specifically for the Albek Duo. Italian composer Alessandro Lucchetti’s Fantasy on Themes from Giacamo Puccini’s “Tosca” received its world premiere recording on their Eroica South of the Alps CD. Patrick Jonathan recently completed Postcards from K.L., a chamber work for violin, piano and percussion dedicated to the Albek Duo. The well-known American composer William Perry wrote his Gemini Concerto: An Entertainment for Violin, Piano and Orchestra for Ambra and Fiona Albek, who presented the world premiere with the Pioneer Valley Symphony, conducted by Paul Phillips. It is being recorded for Naxos Records by the Albek Duo and the National Symphony of Ireland.
